Cross Country kicks off the season with setting Records and Challenges

The Cross Country team at Granada Hills Charter High School (GHC) had their first meet on Saturday, September 15 towards the evening at the 38th Woodbridge invitational in Silver Lakes, California. They competed with over 150 schools around the area of Southern California in this 5k race on the flat trail. Some GHC runners did not disappoint at all.

Women’s varsity placed 6th out of 32 teams in their division meet, thanks to freshman Sofia Abrego. She placed 1st in her division meet and finished at a time of 17:02. This is extremely impressive for a freshman. Abrego is not only considered the fastest freshman at GHC, but one of the fastest girls around the Southern California area. Abrego placed 29th out of the whole entire invitational in the women’s division group.

As for the boys varsity team, they placed 24th out of 33 teams in their division meet. Senior Sean Larbaoui, varsity and student captain of the team, finishes in a time of 15:40. He placed 83rd individually out of the whole entire invitational in the men's division group. This was once again not a surprised at all from his team mates.

Besides varsity, Junior Varsity (JV) had a rough start for their season unfortunately. Women’s JV placed 15th out of 18 teams in their division meet. In other hand, Men’s JV got last place out of the 24 teams in total. According them, they feel confident that they will do better next time.

“Despite my leg, I was not satisfied with my time, but it is what it is and I’ll do better next time. I’m a lot faster now, so I know I can improve,” junior Kimberly Hernandez said.

Last year, JV were able to proceed in the city championships. In the season, they improved their time after every meet.

Besides competition, the team felt that this invational is very important, bonding wise and representation.

“I thought it was important that my team attended because we represented out school,” Junior Hernandez also said.

This year, Cross Country receive new addition to the team. Coach Kurowski and assistant coach Jim are now coaching the team. Unfortunately, coach Wolman has retired for the past month.

The coaches and the team are truly looking forward for the season, having Woodbridge to create goals for them in the beginning.
