The Perks of Being A Wallflower Movie Review
In the beginning of its development, John Hughes begin to write the film’s screenplay as a him making a big comeback. However, he never finished the script at all. As he was writing the script, he had a mind of who to cast for the production. After that, many people became interest on the project like Ron Howard, Richard Linklater, etc. Also, Mr. Mudd productions became interested in the project where he wanted Chbosky to adapt the film instead of Hughs. Therefore, Chbosky begin to finish the script while having to apply his own sense of creativity. Filming took place in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area.
The film focuses on a character name Charlie Kelmeckis (Logan Lerman) who prepares to start his first day of high school. He did not really had any friends and is bullied by multiple people in his classrooms. In addition, he did not really had any friends and did not know the proper way to express himself towards. However, this went on until he met Sam (Emma Watson) and Patrick (Ezra Miller) who conformt him and is interested to know more about Charlie. From there on, Charlie would go on multiple adventures with them while having a great time, but then is haunted by his past along the way.
The acting is spot on when it comes to Logan Lerman, who portrayed Charlie Kelmeckis in the film. He was favorite out of the whole entire cast because Charlie such a likable character to audiences. In the first act of the film, Charlie was getting ride from Sam and Patrick to their house. As they arrive to his house, Charlie then got off the car and thanked Patrick and Sam for the ride. Patrick then responded, “Yeah, no problem. We will see you at school tomorrow.” After that, Patrick and Sam took off. As they were taking off, Charlie then said, “ok” in a soft and innocent tone. However, I wasn’t a fan Emma Watson performance in the film because I feel she was trying to hard and is out of place. In the second act of the film, Charlie kiss Sam instead of Mary Elizabeth, who was his girlfriend, in a truth or dare game. Sam then got made at Charlie because she had a boyfriend. However, the audience can clearly see that Emma was trying to mad while evoking as sense of emotion.
I enjoy the cinematography where it was very austics over time. Also, the cinematographer did not a good job on showcasing the characters sense of emotion. In the first act of the film, the camera focuses on Charlie dancing up and down in the bedroom while listening some music from his tape. In the background, the audience can see that his wall is painted light blue. This shot full represent the type of character Charlie is.
I did not like the script at all where I feel it was just random and did not make up the character’s sense of personality to the story. Going back to the truth or dare scene, Sam was mad at Charlie because he kissed her and knows that she has a boyfriend. However, this clearly did not make any sense because Sam like Charlie where the audience can clearly see that from the beginning of the film.
The film were able to give these character a good arc, but goes in cycle where it is just repeating itself. The film were able to give these character a good arc, but goes in cycle where it is just repeating itself. In the first act of the film, Sam was developing a sense of relationship with Charlie, but then has a boyfriend in the middle of it. In the second act of the film, Sam does not like Charlie, even though she like him once. In the third act of the film, Sam was cheated out from his boyfriends and decides to be in love with Charlie again.
The film utilize clever music where it really represent the character’s personality and mood. In the first act of the film, the song, “Teenage Riot” by Sonic Youth represent Charles's sense of emotion of him being dropped off by Sam and Patrick.
This is probably my favorite part of the whole entire film because it had a unique element and the music fit really well. In the beginning of the movie, Charlie listens to music from a tape that was given to his sister Candace from her boyfriend. The music listed on the tape wasn’t music Charlie listened to before. He ended up liking the music and expanded the horizon of his music tastes. This music also helped Charlie come out of his shell of being a shy person into becoming an extrovert.
If you’re a fan of romcom movies, this is definitely the movie to watch. If you don’t like over dramatizing scenes and trigger warnings, you shouldn’t watch this movie. Since this movie is based on the lives of teenagers, with stories that we can relate to. It can develop an emotional spot on some people since they may have experienced that event. In all I would recommend this movie to teenagers between the ages of 14-17 since they would enjoy the whole party scene.
